Syphilis, or lues, is an STD caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. It mainly occurs in men who have sex with men. In the first stage, it often causes a sore (ulcer) on the penis, vagina, anus or mouth. Untreated syphilis can cause serious health problems after many years. The number of cases is rising slightly, with more than 1300 diagnoses in 2021 through sexual health centres.
Syphilis has four stages: primary, secondary, latent and tertiary. In the primary stage, a painless ulcer (ulcer) develops on the genitals, anus or mouth. Without treatment, flu-like symptoms, rashes and bumps (secondary) follow. The latent stage has no symptoms, but the tertiary stage can cause serious damage to the heart and brain.
Note: symptoms can vary between individuals. For a comprehensive overview of symptoms and stages, information from STI AIDS Netherlands can be consulted.

If syphilis is left untreated, it can cause serious health problems after many years. The symptoms that then arise can manifest themselves in specific organs such as the heart (cardiovascular syphilis) and the nervous system (neurosyphilis).
Syphilis can be diagnosed in various ways. Both a blood test and a TPSU test are suitable for this. Note that a TPSU test is only suitable when there are sores present. A TPSU test can detect the genetic material of the bacterium Treponema pallidum in fluid from the sores.
A blood test involves taking a small amount of blood with a simple finger prick. This blood sample is analysed with the utmost precision in our advanced laboratory at Easly.
You will receive your test results online via a secure portal, exclusively accessible to you. The results will be supplemented with personalised medical advice, so that you can take the right measures immediately.
Please note that syphilis is not detectable immediately after infection; the incubation period varies from 10 to 90 days. See below for more information on the best time to test.
STD | Incubation period | When to test |
Chlamydia | 14 days | Two weeks after unprotected sex. Test immediately in case of symptoms and repeat the test after two weeks if the result is negative. |
Gonorrhoea | 14 days | Two weeks after unprotected sex. Test immediately in case of symptoms and repeat the test after two weeks if the result is negative. |
Trichomonas | 21 days | Four weeks after unprotected sex. Test immediately in case of complaints and repeat the test after four weeks if the result is negative. |
Mycoplasma | 28 days | In case of persistent complaints, without indications of Chlamydia or Gonorrhoea. Testing for mycoplasma is particularly useful in men with persistent complaints. |
Herpes | 4 days | Immediately in the presence of blisters in or around the vagina, on or around the penis, in or around the anus. |
Syphilis (primary) | 10 to 90 days | Immediately in the presence of a sore (ulcer) in or around the vagina, on or around the penis, in or around the anus or in the mouth. |
Genital syphilis
Anyone who has unprotected sex runs the risk of contracting syphilis. Even with protected sex (with a condom) there is a small risk, especially through skin-to-skin contact, for example with sores or lesions of an infected person. People with a weakened immune system or existing skin conditions such as eczema run a greater risk of a more serious course of the infection.
If you test positive for syphilis, treatment may be necessary. It is usually treated with antibiotics, such as penicillin, to kill the bacteria. With early diagnosis, treatment is simple and effective, but the longer the infection goes untreated, the more serious the complications can be. It is important to start treatment as soon as possible to prevent serious organ damage.
If you have any symptoms that lead you to suspect syphilis, Easly advises you to consult your own doctor or the GGD (Municipal Health Service). If you prefer not to do so, you can of course have yourself tested at Easly. However, it is only possible to be tested for primary syphilis by taking a sample from the sore you have. If the result is positive, Easly will still refer you to your own doctor.
The STD self-tests are analysed with a reliable serum test, specifically designed to detect syphilis. The results are assessed and validated by a medical molecular microbiologist. For this test, a small amount of blood is taken by means of a simple finger prick. This blood sample is analysed with the utmost precision in our advanced laboratory at Easly.
Note: The method and the moment of sampling always influence the reliability of the result. For extra certainty, the test methodology is based on validated studies and recognised test methods.
You take a swab from a suspected infected area (sore or blister) on your body and send the sample to us. Once we have received your sample, the test will be analysed and you can expect the results within 48 hours.
After collection, you send your bodily material to the laboratory by post. On average, medical post takes 1 to 3 days. After arrival at the laboratory, your bodily material is analysed as quickly as possible for the test(s) you requested. You can then expect your result within approximately 48 hours after arrival at the lab.
As soon as your result is known, it will be published on your personal and secure results page. Only you can access this page using the unique code that is in your test kit. So be sure to keep it safe!
If the result is positive, we advise you to contact your own doctor as soon as possible for further information, treatment and to facilitate a partner notification. Easly does not offer treatment.
If you test positive, you will receive a test certificate, signed by the medical molecular microbiologist, which your doctor can use to start treatment.
Easly does not provide treatment in the event of a positive result. Our services are limited to offering and analysing the STD self-test. We advise you to contact your doctor immediately after a positive test result, so that you can be treated for the contracted STD as quickly and effectively as possible.
In the case of primary syphilis (in the presence of an ulcer), all partners from the past three months should be warned, regardless of whether or not a condom was used.
The test costs €59.95, including VAT.
