What Does This Kit Test?

This kit measures ferritin. Unlike standard serum iron testing, ferritin analysis offers a comprehensive view of the body’s total iron reserves. Elevated or decreased ferritin levels can be key indicators of conditions like iron deficiency anemia or hemochromatosis (a genetic disorder causing excessive iron accumulation).

What Is Ferritin?

Ferritin is a vital protein complex responsible for iron storage primarily concentrated in the liver, spleen, and bone marrow. It stores iron in a soluble, non-toxic form, releasing it into circulation whenever the body requires it—such as during red blood cell production or periods of increased demand. Blood ferritin levels mirror total body iron stores, making them a critical diagnostic tool.

Ferritin Levels – When to Test?

Abnormal ferritin values may warrant further medical evaluation, especially if you experience persistent symptoms suggestive of iron deficiency or overload.

Low Ferritin (often below 30 ng/mL):

• Depleted Iron Stores: Inadequate iron for red blood cell production, leading to chronic fatigue and weakness.
• Immune Vulnerability: Higher susceptibility to infections due to compromised immune function.
• Physical Signs: Hair thinning, brittle nails, shortness of breath on exertion, and occasional dizziness or headaches.
• Potential Causes: Dietary deficiency, blood loss (including heavy menstrual bleeding), or malabsorption disorders (e.g., celiac disease).

High Ferritin (often above 300–400 ng/mL for men):

• Iron Overload: Can indicate hemochromatosis, an inherited condition that leads to excessive iron accumulation and potential organ damage if untreated.
• Inflammatory or Liver Disorders: Elevated ferritin may also reflect chronic inflammation, liver disease (e.g., hepatitis, alcoholic liver disease), or metabolic syndrome.
• Typical Symptoms: Joint pain (particularly in the hands, knees, or hips), abdominal discomfort, persistent fatigue, and in advanced cases, skin pigmentation changes (“bronzing”) or heart irregularities.
• Long-Term Risks: Untreated iron overload can lead to cirrhosis, diabetes, and cardiac complications.

The Role of Ferritin in the Body

By regulating iron availability, ferritin helps maintain optimal red blood cell production, supports muscle metabolism, and preserves energy levels. It also serves as an acute-phase reactant, meaning ferritin can rise in the presence of infection or inflammation, which may complicate interpretation if elevated without a clear iron-related cause.

Ferritin and Its Relationship with Iron

While serum iron captures immediate circulating iron, ferritin reveals the body’s stored iron. Interpreting both values together—often alongside markers like transferrin saturation—can clarify whether symptoms stem from true iron deficiency, chronic disease, or another underlying condition.
