LDL-Cholesterol Significance
LDL cholesterol stands for Low Density Liporotein. Like HDL, it is a lipoprotein composed of cholesterol particles and proteins. LDL is also called the “bad cholesterol” because it can precipitate in blood vessels if present in excess. This is where it causes arteriosclerosis, or atherosclerosis. The higher the LDL, the higher the risk of cardiovascular disease.
LDL-Cholesterol Values and Interpretation.
- Normal:
An LDL cholesterol value between 0 and 3.2 mmol/L is considered normal. This indicates a healthy balance and a lower risk of cardiovascular disease. - Attention:
When the LDL cholesterol level is between 3.2 and 3.37 mmol/L, this is considered “safe”. This means that the value is at the upper limit of normal and it is wise to adjust lifestyle or diet to prevent further increases. - High:
An LDL cholesterol value above 3.37 mmol/L is considered abnormal and too high. This may indicate an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. For values above this limit, it is important to consult with a doctor and discuss possible adjustments in diet, exercise or medication. - Invalid:
A value of 0 mmol/L is considered invalid, possibly due to an error in the test or insufficient sample material. A new measurement is recommended to obtain a reliable result - Note:
LDL cholesterol is an important biomarker for assessing cardiovascular risk. Regular monitoring and lifestyle adjustments can contribute to better health.
LDL cholesterol Values and Interpretation (in table).
You can also find the LDL cholesterol values and their interpretation in tabular form below, so you can easily understand what the values mean for your health.
Result | Unit | Value min-max | Age | Gender | Biomarker interpretation |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Normal | mmol/L | 0 - 3,2 | 18 - 100 | Male & Female | The LDL cholesterol is good. |
Take care | mmol/L | 3.2 - 3.37 | 18 - 100 | Male & Female | LDL cholesterol is still within normal levels, but is on the high side. |
Not normal | mmol/L | 3.37 - 15 | 18 - 100 | Male & Female | LDL cholesterol falls outside normal values and is too high.LDL cholesterol falls outside normal values and is too high. |
