HBA1c Meaning
HbA1c measures the average blood sugar (glucose) level over the past two to three months. This biomarker analysis measures the glycation of hemoglobin (Hb).
HbA1c Value
Here is an overview of HbA1c values to help you understand when your HbA1c level is normal, low, or high.
- Normal:
- An HbA1c value between 21.2 and 40 mmol/mol is considered normal. This indicates a well-regulated blood sugar level.
- Low:
- An HbA1c value between 0 and 20.2 mmol/mol is considered too low. This may indicate that your blood sugar levels are frequently too low.
- Caution:
- An HbA1c value between 20.2 and 21.2 mmol/mol is considered “cautionary.” It is still within the normal range but on the lower side, potentially indicating low glucose levels.
- An HbA1c value between 40 and 42.1 mmol/mol is also considered “cautionary.” It is still within the normal range but on the higher side, possibly signaling an increased risk of diabetes.
- High:
- An HbA1c value between 42.1 and 80 mmol/mol falls outside the normal range and is considered too high. This may indicate the presence of diabetes or an increased risk of developing it.
