GGT Meaning
GGT or Gamma GT stands for Gamma glutamyl transferase and is a biomarker belonging to the group of liver enzymes. Like ALAT, the enzyme is made by liver cells.
The value of Gamma GT should always be interpreted together with the other liver enzymes to make a statement about the functioning of the liver (and bile ducts).
Causes of Abnormal GGT Values
An elevated Gamma GT can indicate several conditions. An increased Gamma GT in combination with increased AF may indicate obstructed bile outflow, for example due to gallstones. An elevation of Gamma GT in combination with an elevation of ALAT (and ASAT) may occur with the use of certain medications, alcohol consumption or abuse, with severe obesity, diabetes and an overactive thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism).
GGT Values in Men
Here is an overview of GGT levels in men, so you can see when your GGT level is normal, low or high.
- Normal:
- Age 18-19 years: A GGT value between 6.3 and 28.5 U/L is considered normal, indicating healthy liver function.
- Age 19-100: A GGT value between 0 and 57 U/L is considered normal and indicates good liver function.
- Low:
- Age 18-19 years: A GGT value below 6 U/L is considered abnormal and too low. This may require further interpretation along with other liver enzymes.
- Caution:
- Age 18-19 years: Values between 6 and 6.3 U/L are considered ‘fitted’ and are at the lower limit of normal.
- Age 18-19 years: Values between 28.5 and 30 U/L still fall within normal, but are at the upper limit.
- Age 19-100: Values between 57 and 60 U/L are considered ‘fitted’ and are at the upper limit of normal.
- High:
- Age 18-19 years: A GGT value above 30 U/L is considered abnormal and too high, which may require further interpretation.
- Age 19-100: A GGT value above 60 U/L falls outside normal and may indicate liver problems.

- Age 18-19 years: A GGT value between 6.3 and 21.85 U/L is considered normal and indicates good liver function.
